Small breeds that do well in a home daycare
Breeds and mixes under 25 lbs that tend to thrive in a calm home-based small-dog daycare, and what matters more than breed.
Temperament comes before breed
I will say this first because it is the truth. The meet-and-greet decides fit, not the breed. A calm larger-small dog fits. A reactive tiny dog does not. Breed is a hint, not a verdict.
That said, certain small dogs tend to take to a home daycare well.
Breeds that often do well
- Maltese and Shih Tzu are usually social and happy to share a lap.
- Yorkshire Terriers can be opinionated but bond quickly with a calm group.
- Small poodles and poodle mixes are smart and adapt fast.
- Pomeranians often do well when the pack is small and predictable.
- Chihuahuas can thrive when they have a quiet corner and a person close by.
Small mixes count too
Plenty of the dogs here are mixes. A fifteen-pound rescue with a gentle disposition is a better fit than a tightly bred dog who cannot settle. The weight and the temperament are what I check. Read why the 25-pound limit matters.
What actually matters
- Under 25 pounds
- Up to date on vaccinations
- Social or socializable, and not aggressive toward other dogs
- Able to take a rest when the group rests
If that sounds like your dog, book a meet-and-greet and we will find out together.
